CSOPS Event: First Short Course in Continuous Manufacturing Pharmaceutical Technology

An introduction to continuous manufacturing operations with an emphasis on direct compression of pharmaceutical products. These two 5-day courses will provide background seminars and hands-on training in the CpAML manufacturing facility located on the Rutgers University Piscataway campus. These trainings will include four integral aspects of Continuous Manufacturing (Continuous Direct Compaction- CDC) divided over a two-week period.

Week One - June 13-17, 2016
A general introduction on the engineering fundamentals and key concepts in continuous processing will be given on day 1. The first week will cover all the unit operations specific to CDC- Material feeding, milling, blending and compaction. These unit operations will then be integrated in the continuous manufacturing line and the functioning of the entire line will be demonstrated. Some of the PAT tools relevant to CM will be demonstrated in the first week. The morning sessions will include classroom lectures giving a brief overview of the topic of the day. This will be followed by hands on training on the instrument/ equipment.

Week Two - June 20-24, 2016
The second week will be focused on analyzing the intermediates and the final products obtained from the CM line using ‘PAT’ and ‘Material Characterization’ tools. This will be followed by an introduction to development strategies, evaluation, and implementation of predictive modeling tools at both the unit operation and process level. The ‘Controls’ module will provide training on continuous pharmaceutical closed-loop process control.
